Mick Harte was here is a tragic novel, uncommon for children's literature because it deals with something more serious than the typical adventure, love story. Mick Harte was here is about a young girl whose brother dies from a bike accident, and how she copes with his loss everyday. This isn't your typical accident either, a bike accident, an accident caused by not wearing your helmet. Therefore, not only does this novel address a more morbid attitude, but it reveals a moralistic side as well.
Mick Harte was riding home from school one day on his bicycle, he hit a rock by accident and fell to the ground hitting his head and dying immediately. For Mick's classmates, friends, and family is death throughout the novel is something incredibly difficult to deal with. Mick was a kid known for being outgoing, the class clown, and a hero. The whole point of this novel is to convey the message that safety should always come first. If only Mick wore his helmet he would not have died, he would not have left his family to grieve. This story opens the eyes of their main targets ( children), and lets them realize the severe consequences in a real life situation and through a boy much like them. Mick Harte is a wonderful story that can really hit home to anyone, I highly recommend reading this novel no matter how old you are.
