The Giver, a utopia society

Today in class we discussed how in the novel The Giver, written by Lois Lowry, the community is portrayed in the first half as a utopia. In which everything, everyone is as pleasurable as can be. There is no pain, no fear, no love, no color, everything is based off sameness. Therefore, making a perfect world in which no harm can corrupt it. However as the novel progresses into the second half of the book we discover that it is infact a distopia. A place in which no feelings can be shared, no invdividualism, and no choices can be made other than the rules that are written out for them in the first place. Jonas can not take this way of living anymore, therefore he decided to break the rules and make a CHOICE of his own, to leave the community. It is the first step in creating a new atmosphere for the community, everything they ahve lived without for so long will come back to torment them now that Jonas has left and the memories will become public. A life without choices is no life at all, therefore abandoning this idea of a utopia, JOnas changes the world with what he knew and creates an opportunity for change.
