The Spiritual Aspect
After reading "The Princess and the Goblin", I have realized how much it associates with spiritual and religious persepectives. The Great Grandmother is portrayed as almost a god- like figure. She heals, she is caring, she is always watching Irene's every move. The Great Grandmother, to me, was at first sorta creepy in a way, I almost felt as though she was on the bad- side. However, after reading the handout " Angel in the House", it became more clear to me that MacDonald wanted her to be seen as a femine god. Only the characters in the book with spiritual eyes could see the grandmother, or use her special powers. Her powers helped Irene and Curdie in the end, and the grandmother waits until others will come to see her light.
